Assam's University System & CGPA Grading Explained
Assam's higher-education system is anchored by Gauhati University (Guwahati), established in 1948 and one of the oldest and largest universities in the Northeast, alongside Dibrugarh University, Cotton University and the Assam Science and Technology University. Central institutions such as IIT Guwahati, Tezpur University and Assam University, Silchar also serve students across the state, while the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) and the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) conduct the school-leaving examinations. The state also hosts NIT Silchar, AIIMS Guwahati, IIM Guwahati and a fast-growing network of medical, agricultural, skill and private universities.
Under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and the UGC 10-point grading scale, every university publishes its own CGPA to percentage conversion rule in its academic regulations. We currently index 65 verified Assam university formulas below — select your university to convert instantly, free of cost, with a printable PDF report.
Official CGPA to Percentage Formula for Assam Universities
Assam universities follow two main conversion rules. The direct rule used by Gauhati University, Cotton University and IIT Guwahati:
Official Gauhati University CGPA to Percentage Formula:
Percentage (%) = CGPA × 10
Source: GU notification GU/M/AR/2018/399 dated 21 May 2018 (all batches from 2008) — official notice: https://gauhati.ac.in
Most newer Assam state universities — including KKHSOU, Bhattadev University, Madhabdev University and the 2023-batch universities — follow the UGC CBCS default where no separate rule is published:
UGC CBCS Default Formula (newer state universities & open university):
Percentage (%) = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10

- Step 1 — Find your CGPA: Locate the final CGPA on your marksheet or university website, e.g.
7.8. - Step 2 — Pick your university formula: Select your university from the directory below; the official formula is applied automatically by our calculator.
- Step 3 — Apply the formula: For Gauhati University,
7.8 × 10 = 78%. For Dibrugarh University PG (2009–2020),7.8 × 10 + 5 = 83%. - Step 4 — SGPA to CGPA: If you only have semester SGPAs, aggregate them by credits first — your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of all semesters.

Assam CGPA to Percentage — FAQs
Q1: How do I convert CGPA to percentage in Assam universities?
Gauhati University (GU), the state's principal university, converts CGPA to percentage using the direct rule Percentage = CGPA × 10, as prescribed in the official notification GU/M/AR/2018/399 dated 21 May 2018 for all batches from 2008 onwards. Example: 7.8 × 10 = 78%. Other universities such as ASTU, Dibrugarh University and most new state universities follow the UGC CBCS default (CGPA - 0.75) × 10 — always verify the conversion rule published in your own university regulations before converting.
Q2: What is the official Gauhati University CGPA to percentage formula?
GU prescribes the direct conversion Percentage (%) = CGPA × 10 under notification GU/M/AR/2018/399 (21 May 2018), approved by the Academic Council on 29 March 2018. A CGPA of 7.8 converts to 7.8 × 10 = 78%. A later notice (18 August 2020) reaffirms the same rule.
Q3: Which formula do IIT Guwahati, NIT Silchar and other technical institutes use?
IIT Guwahati and NIT Silchar use the standard institute conversion CGPA × 10 — so an 8.0 CGPA equals exactly 80%. ASTU (Notification ASTU/Academic/2018/404) also prescribes CGPA × 10. Dibrugarh University PG batches (2009–2020) use the official dual formula: Percentage = CGPA × 10 + 5 for CGPA ≥ 5.5, and CGPA × 10 for 4.5 ≤ CGPA < 5.5.
Q4: Which CGPA at Gauhati University equals 70 percent?
A CGPA of 7.0 converts to exactly 70%: 7.0 × 10 = 70.0%, the usual First Class threshold at Gauhati University.
Q5: How do I convert SGPA to CGPA before applying the formula?
Each semester reports an SGPA (semester grade point average). Your final CGPA is the credit-weighted average of all semester SGPAs. Once you have your final CGPA, apply your university's rule (e.g., Percentage = CGPA × 10 for GU). Use the Semester Aggregator tab on each university page to combine semesters first.
Q6: How do medical college students in Assam convert their marks?
All Assam medical colleges are affiliated to Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences (SSUHS). MBBS and PG results are marks-based, so percentages are printed directly on mark sheets. Where programmes report a 10-point CGPA, the equivalence applied is CGPA × 10.
