UGC 10-Point CBCS Grading System: Pass Marks, SGPA to CGPA Calculation
Understand O, A+, A, B+, B letter grades, credit points, and how to accurately calculate SGPA to CGPA under UGC CBCS guidelines.
The UGC Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) Table
Under UGC CBCS, each course is assigned credit hours and a letter grade based on performance:
- O (Outstanding): Grade Point 10
- A+ (Excellent): Grade Point 9
- A (Very Good): Grade Point 8
- B+ (Good): Grade Point 7
- B (Above Average): Grade Point 6
- C (Average): Grade Point 5
- P (Pass): Grade Point 4
- F (Fail): Grade Point 0
Grade P (4.00) is the minimum pass grade. Any course grade below P is recorded as F — a backlog that must be cleared before the degree is awarded. The same scale is used to compute both SGPA and CGPA, which is why a single F grade (0 points) pulls the average down far more than one weak C grade.
How SGPA is Calculated for a Semester
SGPA = Sum of (Grade Point × Credit) for all courses / Total Credits
Example: five courses with grade points 9, 8, 7, 6 and 4, carrying credits 4, 4, 3, 3 and 2:
SGPA = (9×4 + 8×4 + 7×3 + 6×3 + 4×2) / (4 + 4 + 3 + 3 + 2) = 115 / 16 = 7.19
Each semester is calculated the same way, using only the courses offered in that semester. Backlogs and improved grades change the grade point used, so the SGPA of a repeated course reflects only the latest attempt.
How Cumulative CGPA is Computed
CGPA = Total (Semester SGPA × Semester Credits) / Total Credits
Example: Semester 1 gives an SGPA of 7.19 over 16 credits and Semester 2 gives 8.0 over 18 credits:
CGPA = (7.19×16 + 8.0×18) / (16 + 18) = 259 / 34 = 7.62
Because the CGPA is credit-weighted, high-credit semesters influence the final number more than low-credit ones. That is why your CGPA can change even when a single semester's SGPA improves.
Pass Marks and Minimum CGPA
Under the UGC framework, a minimum CGPA of 4.00 (grade P) is required to pass. Transcripts showing a CGPA below 4.00 — such as 3.10, 3.50 or 3.80 — are marked Fail/Backlog. Some engineering disciplines additionally require a higher minimum CGPA, up to 5.00, for all papers to be considered cleared.
Converting UGC CGPA to Percentage
UGC does not prescribe one universal conversion formula. Delhi University uses CGPA × 9.5, while technical universities like MAKAUT and VTU use (CGPA - 0.75) × 10. Always use the formula notified by your own institution, and cross-check the grade-point table in your scheme before applying anywhere.
If your university has not notified a conversion rule, the UGC-recommended CGPA × 9.5 is generally accepted by employers and admission committees — but confirm it with your examination cell first. As a benchmark, a CGPA of 6.75 and above is treated as First Class (60%+) at most institutions, and 8.25 and above as Distinction, though thresholds vary by scheme.
Finally, keep the official grade table and the notification letter from your university handy. They are the evidence you need if an employer, lender or university questions your converted percentage.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is calculated for one semester using the grade points and credits of that semester's courses. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the credit-weighted average of all semesters together.
What CGPA is required to pass under UGC CBCS?
The minimum pass grade is P with grade point 4.00. Any CGPA below 4.00 is marked Fail/Backlog on the transcript. Some engineering programmes set a higher minimum, up to 5.00.
How do I convert UGC CGPA to percentage?
UGC does not provide a single formula. Use the conversion notified by your own university — for example, CGPA × 9.5 at Delhi University, or (CGPA - 0.75) × 10 at MAKAUT and VTU.
